Through the flurry of snow

airportwinter-1It was a cold, dreadful morning. A blizzard morning. No heating in the plane until the engines were on. And no engines on until we had a slot for takeoff. And no slot for takeoff until the most of the morning rush was over. airportwinter-3Finally the air traffic control had mercy on us. The captain was allowed to start the engines. The wings were de-iced at the gate. airportwinter-2There was snow everywhere, and a flurry behind the tail of each departing airplane. We rushed off, and were airborne. And suddenly there was the most marvelous golden sunrise, like an old oil painting on canvas.

Sometimes all you need to do to see beauty is to raise your eyes above the flurry right ahead of you. And if you still cannot see it, try a bird’s eye view.

A shy sunrise on a stormy morning

sunrise-1It was a dark and stormy morning, one of quite a few the past weeks. In this post-apocalyptic weather where the planet seems to be forever covered by brooding black swirling clouds, one forgets that the sun exists. It is difficult to envision that the sun shines 12 hours a day, even above the clouds of Gotham City. Lack of sunlight is simply a matter of obscured circumstances, not a fact of any kind.

And so, as we rose above the clouds this stormy morning, we saw the most singular sunrise. Light battling the clouds. When it could not shine through, it shone underneath, covering the lower layers of cloud in red velvety light. And finally the clouds had to give in, and we saw a shy little lemon yellow December sunrise. sunrise-2(Somewhere above the Baltic Sea; December 2015)

3 good things in 24 hours

copenhagen-1One dark, cold night in Copenhagen there was a spur-of-the-moment reunion. Indian takeaway, memories of days in Cambridge, and touching base after 4 years.

Right afterwards there was another spur-of-the-moment crazy craving resulting in Belgian waffles with hot dripping chocolate fresh from a street stall at Stroget.

copenhagen-2And finally, after a busy day in Lund and an adventurous train ride to the airport, there was a brand-spanking new Finnair Airbus A350 and an upgrade to business class. Champagne all around. I was not the only one taking photos – and some had brought proper equipment, too.

I could choose to remember only the hurry trying to catch the train, or the business meetings and endless powerpoint slides. Or I could choose to remember these 3 good, refreshing things in 24 hours. And the glass of champagne on the way home, under a fancy “Aurora” cabin light show.

Reality is never objective; it is always what we choose to perceive. And this starry night at 33,000 feet I chose to perceive my bubbly champagne very carefully and let everything else fade away, if just for a moment.

Takeoff

Helsinkiairport-1Another early morning takeoff. Cannot remember where I was going. Perhaps Stockholm. Helsinki airport bathed in the morning sunlight and mist lay over the fields. I cannot remember what I was thinking. Probably nothing. Probably something. But I probably was not thinking that “this is a beautiful moment and it will never, ever, return again. Because one second later, the world will have shifted, if ever so slightly.”

Live today. I probably wasn’t. My loss.

Two faces of London

London-7Sporadic smog and frequent blue skies. This is London today. 50 years ago it was the other way around. As we circled above London in the busy morning air traffic, I thought of the generations of Londoners between the ramp-up of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century and 1960s when the Clean Air Act began to take visible effect. These people did not see much of a sun unless they found their way out of the city. In 1952 during the Great Smog, thousands of people died and thousands more were made ill by the toxic filthy pea soup that hung over London for 4 days.

Today there is the chance to see a blue sky over London, even without rising a kilometer into the air. Of course the view from up here is much more stunning.

Up in the air

propellerYou may have become fed up with photos from the air, one after the other. It seems as if the moments in the air are the only moments I have for myself this fall.

A lady asked for a minute of my time at the gate, waiting to return home after another of my weekly 2-day commutes to Stockholm. She was researching and asked how often I come to Bromma airport. Every week, I replied. “Really? Are you a politician?” she asked. Goodness, no, but I work for a multinational company. By now my carbon footprint is so large I weep for it and the generations required to pay our poor planet back.
